Variety of web sites available to help you net a job

Up until recently, job-hunting on the Internet was only for technical types.

If you aren't in the information technology field or an engineer or in some other profession that requires computer proficiency, you may not be aware of some of the latest developments in the cyber search for jobs. You can't afford to be out of the loop any longer. In fact, things are changing so fast; this article will probably be obsolete within weeks.

Here's what's happening:

·        Employers are scrambling to find qualified employees at all levels. They are trying many non-traditional methods. You've probably heard their radio ads, seen the large ads they are taking out in the newspaper, and heard about career fairs being hosted in an attempt to attract employees to their company. This costs big money. For instance, an average radio ad runs about two weeks and costs around $2000. Newspaper ads range from $18 (for two lines) to over $6,000 for a quarter-page.

·        Major newspapers have seen the trend and now put their classified ads on the Internet. However, this is sometimes provided as a part of a package of services that comes when you buy an ad that runs in that newspaper. (www.careerpath.com) features nearly 30 national editions.

·        Employees are more willing to keep their eyes open for new job opportunities, since they know that there are no guarantees of job security with any employer.

·        Many companies, even the small ones, now have home pages, where the employer can share more information about their company with potential job seekers (and post want ads, often connected to Internet job services).

·        Roughly 20 percent of American homes have Internet access, while 80 percent of homes are hooked to cable. Major cable companies have been frantically working to bring the Internet to your TV. In many markets, they are ready to launch within the next few months. (In the Milwaukee area, Time Warner Cable made this announcement recently.)

·        There is a sharp increase in the number of job hunters using the Internet from a broad range of employment groups such as skilled tradespeople, clerical employees and professionals. Some of these people don't have a computer at home but have access to Internet employment services through a computer at work.

·        One of the fastest growing groups of employees are leased, or contract workers. These folks (typically engineering and information technology professionals) and the employers, who hire them, are using Internet employment services to find each other.

·        There are over 40,000 job-hunting services on the Internet. To get you started, go check out these sites: www.careermosaic.com and www.ypn.com/jobs. For search tips check out: www.jobtrak.com/jobguide. Additional sites to visit are www.occ.com (on America Online) and www.monsterboard.com. For listings in Southeast Wisconsin, www.WiJobs.com and for Job Service listings, www.jobnet.dilhr.state.wi.us/jobnet.
